From an idea to an independent nonprofit delivering local news throughout Amherst, The Amherst Bear shows what can happen when a community comes together around a good idea.
Six months ago, The Amherst Bear was an idea. Today, it is a real newspaper arriving in mailboxes across Amherst—and an independent nonprofit organization ready to carry its mission forward. For the Amherst Community Foundation, that’s something worth celebrating.
In the summer of 2025, a group of Amherst residents approached ACF with an ambitious idea: bring a community newspaper back to Amherst. They had the vision, the energy and a growing group of volunteers ready to make it happen. What they didn’t yet have was the nonprofit infrastructure needed to begin raising money. Building that infrastructure takes time, and the community didn’t want to wait.
ACF stepped in as The Amherst Bear’s fiscal sponsor, creating a bridge that allowed the group to immediately begin accepting tax-deductible charitable contributions while it pursued its own nonprofit status. The Bear remained an independent, community-led initiative, while ACF provided the fundraising and administrative infrastructure behind the scenes.
From there, The Bear’s volunteers did the hard work. They built support, told their story and rallied the community around the idea of restoring local journalism in Amherst. ACF served as the back office, processing contributions, maintaining financial records, providing donor acknowledgments and tax receipts, and distributing funds as they were needed.
And the community responded. Over roughly three months, more than $100,000 was raised for The Amherst Bear through ACF. Support came in many forms—from traditional online donations and donor-advised funds to an especially generous gift of Apple stock.
ACF charged The Bear no administrative fee for its fiscal sponsorship. Our volunteers provided the back-office support, while ACF’s Annual Fund covered expenses such as credit-card processing fees. The goal was simple: give The Bear the infrastructure it needed so its volunteers could concentrate on building something for Amherst.
From Idea to Institution
By February 2026, the idea that came to ACF the previous summer had become something much bigger. The Amherst Bear had received its nonprofit status, its first full issue was being distributed throughout Amherst, and the organization had reached the point we had all hoped it would: it no longer needed ACF.
With The Bear now established as an independent nonprofit, ACF’s fiscal sponsorship has concluded. All funds raised on behalf of The Bear have been distributed, and the organization is moving forward entirely on its own. We couldn’t be happier about that.
Sometimes the best measure of ACF’s impact isn’t a program we operate or our name on a project. It’s helping Amherst residents turn a good idea into something real. The Bear’s volunteers supplied the idea, passion and enormous amount of work required to bring a community newspaper to life. The people of Amherst supplied the financial support to make it possible. For a critical six months in between, ACF supplied the infrastructure that helped connect the two.
That’s a role we’re proud to play—and as The Amherst Bear begins its next chapter, we’re equally proud to see another community idea graduate from ACF and take on a life of its own.
