Why Amherst Needs a Community Newspaper

For many years, Amherst had a local newspaper that helped keep us connected. In recent years, that presence has been missing, and our community has felt the loss. The Amherst Bear will strive to fill that gap, celebrating and serving the Amherst community by delivering accurate, relevant, trusted local news that fosters civic engagement and strengthens community connections. 

A printed newspaper -- something that lands right on every kitchen counter each month – can reach everyone. A local paper like The Amherst Bear will: 

• Share fact-based articles about town government, schools, community events, and local accomplishments

• Provide impartial and reliable reporting that reflects the diverse voices of our town

• Contain content for all ages, from school-aged children to senior citizens

• Preserve Amherst’s stories today for the history books of tomorrow

As a nonprofit organization, The Amherst Bear relies on generous contributions from community members like YOU. Your support makes it possible to publish a high-quality print newspaper and deliver it – free of charge – each month to all 5,000 households and businesses in Amherst. Together, we’re building a trusted, shared resource that keeps our town connected.

As we await our official 501(c)3 status approval, we have partnered with The Amherst Community Foundation, an established local nonprofit organization that will be collecting donations on our behalf.  Your gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
