Why Amherst Needs a Community Newspaper
For many years, Amherst had a local newspaper that helped keep us connected. In recent years, that presence has been missing, and our community has felt the loss. The Amherst Bear will strive to fill that gap, celebrating and serving the Amherst community by delivering accurate, relevant, trusted local news that fosters civic engagement and strengthens community connections.
A printed newspaper -- something that lands right on every kitchen counter each month – can reach everyone. A local paper like The Amherst Bear will:
“The printed newspaper is a first draft of history. It tells us not just what happened, but how it felt to live in that moment.”
Share fact-based articles about town government, schools, community events, and local accomplishments
Provide impartial and reliable reporting that reflects the diverse voices of our town
Contain content for all ages, from school-aged children to senior citizens
Preserve Amherst’s stories today for the history books of tomorrow

During the fall of 2025, the Amherst Community Foundation was pleased to support The Amherst Bear through a fiscal sponsorship agreement. This arrangement allowed the Foundation to receive donations on the Bear’s behalf while they awaited official tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
In January, The Amherst Bear received confirmation from the IRS that their application was approved and they are now a recognized tax-exempt organization. As a result, the Amherst Community Foundation has concluded its role in fundraising on their behalf.
Going forward, donations may be made directly through The Amherst Bear’s website or by mailing checks to their designated PO Box below.
