Why Amherst Needs a Community Newspaper

A community newspaper is more than just ink on paper -- it’s a way to connect us, strengthen us, and celebrate the place we call home. Your donations not only support the operations of the paper but also support local journalism.

For many years, Amherst had a local newspaper that helped keep us connected. In recent years, that presence has been missing -- and our community has felt the loss. The Amherst Bear exists to fill that gap -- celebrating and serving the Amherst community by delivering accurate, relevant, trusted local news that fosters civic engagement and strengthens community connection.

A printed newspaper -- something that lands right on every kitchen counter every month -- can reach everyone. A local paper like The Amherst Bear will:

The printed newspaper is a first draft of history. It tells us not just what happened, but how it felt to live in that moment.
— Philip Graham, former Washington Post publisher
  • Share fact-based articles about town government, schools, community events, and local accomplishments

  • Provide impartial and reliable reporting that reflects the diverse voices of our town

  • Contain content for all ages, from school-aged children to senior citizens

  • Preserve Amherst’s stories today for the history books of tomorrow

WE NEED your HELP

There’s nothing quite like seeing your name — or your child’s photo — in print. That’s the magic of a hometown paper.
— Stacey Morison, Amherst, NH

Business advertising in the paper will pay for a large part of this monthly newspaper but there are many fees and start-up costs that need to be taken care of as well. We have started a Fundraising Campaign here with the help of the Amherst Foundation and hope you will want to be a part of it. Click here and read over the options you have. We happily accept any size donation. Our aim is to raise $100,000 (includes advertising) by the end of the year.

A newspaper is the center of a community, it’s one of the tent poles of the community, and that’s not going to be replaced by websites and blogs.
— Michael Connelly, novelist

The Amherst Bear is officially registered as a New Hampshire nonprofit, and we are in the process of receiving our 501(c)3 status. In the meantime, donations are being collected on our behalf through the Amherst Community Foundation, so your contributions are fully tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Whether through financial support, time, or ideas, every contribution helps us bring back a community newspaper that tells Amherst’s story - today and for years to come.

There are many ways to be part of this effort. You can check our website for a listing of volunteer and paid positions, join our team to make this happen!
